The Right Stuff
Having all the information and data ready when you apply for abuilding permit on your new project will go a long way in getting your application submitted on the first try.

Many jurisdictions have handouts on their web pages to help you bring the correct information making the process as simple as possible.

Here are some items you will almost always need when applying for a permit.

  • The tax parcel number
  • Address of property if known
  • A site plan drawn to scale usually 1 inch = 20 feet
  • Next weeks tip of the week will deal with what is usually required on a site plan
  • Name of property owner, contractor
  • Address of property owner, contractor
  • Phone contact number for both parties
  • Contractors license number
  • Names of consultants and their phone numbers
  • Plans drawn to scale at 1/4 inch = 1 foot
  • Square footage of building
  • Number of stories
  • Sections and Elevations
  • Energy Calculations
  • Vicinity Map showing location of property so inspector can find project
  • Stamped Structural drawings and calculations
  • Engineered stamped truss drawings
  • Sewer availability or health department approval letter
  • Water purveyor availibility letter
  • Some jurisdictions want proof of ownership
  • Some jurisdictions want letter authorizing independent agent to apply for a permit.
